2005 – Innersport’s Winter Art Show: Absolutely Abstract

In the last year we’ve had pinhole artwork, international scenes and canine artwork adorn our walls – this winter we went for the abstract. Our winter show Jan. 29 also marked our first anniversary in our new location!

We featured abstract artwork by Zarmine Aghazarian, Peggy Cotton, and Andrea Markus.

Zarmine Aghazarian

Zarmine was born and raised in Yerevan, Armenia. She developed an interest in art at a very early age and continued to paint until she moved to the United States in 1970. Although she turned her attention raising a new family, her love of art was still there. She took art classes at the Diablo Valley College and at the community centers in Walnut Creek and Orinda. As her art matured, she experimented with different media such as acrylics, watercolors, mixed media and oil. She is currently concentrating on acrylics and mixed media.

Zarmine is a member of the Lamorinda Arts Alliance. She has taken part in the following exhibitions:

  • Art in the Park, Danville, October 2 & 3, 2004
  • California State Fair, September 2004 “Award of Merit”
  • John Muir Hospital Juried Show, December 2002 and 2003 “Second Place”

“My paintings are personal. They represent the people, places, sites, and sounds that punctuate my life’s experiences. These elements inspire and evoke in me an undeniable desire to paint.

“Every painting begins with a theme, a memory, a thought in mind. I choose the brushes and colors of my palette beforehand. By doing so, my thoughts are more clearly directed.

“I lay primary color on top of primary color, changing brushes to show movement and mood. I enjoy this form of expression because it doesn’t get in the way of simplicity nor does it discourage other interpretations.

“It is my goal to create paintings that catch the eye. Every time a viewer responds to my work I know that I have reached my goal, if only for a moment, and that I have shared something personal with the viewer through my work.”

Andrea Markus

(510) 872-9801

Andrea Markus has been a contemporary artist in the Bay Area for more than 20 years. She has worked in fine art painting, photography, stone, glass, and wood. Her creative philosophy is to integrate passion, intellect, and technique.

Andrea’s recent inspirations and passions are reflected in her oil paintings and photography. She often looks to nature as a source of inspiration that presents itself in wild and beautiful ways. She has traveled throughout the United States photographing nature; later, in her studio, she creates paintings inspired by her photographs. Some of her paintings are realistic, some abstract. The serenity and vibrant colors found in nature are evoked in her paintings to provide a lasting visual memory.

Throughout her artistic career, Andrea has creatively used many different forms, methods, and expressions in her artwork. She is often noted for combining unique concepts with unusual mediums. Her work uniquely combines flow with precision, color with dimension, and simplicity with elegance.
